The QAwerk team first got acquainted with Unfold when it had only a Beta version of its Android app. That version had just a few available templates and fonts; however, we liked the product’s concept and added it to our weekly Bug Crawl immediately. QAwerk specialists performed the testing of the Unfold Android app and published a report with bugs found in our blog. Sometime later, they reached out to us to help them address bad user reviews in stores and reproduce bugs. We were excited to start working on the project, as most of our team had already used Unfold, and we were genuinely interested in making it better.
Our major task was to test Unfold on the latest test Android and iOS versions on all possible devices to uncover what user actions result in crashes, eliminate showstoppers, and reduce the number of medium-to-minor severity bugs.
We worked with pretty tight deadlines, so to release the product updates by the set date, our QA engineers were ready to work extra hours as well as test on weekends, showing utmost responsibility, flexibility, and true commitment to the app’s success.
After completing the initial project, we offered Unfold our exploratory testing services to thoroughly test the app and discover more bugs, which is how our cooperation grew into a long-term partnership. It became our responsibility to handle manual testing of updates, migrations, new designs, templates, and features on an ongoing basis.
Solution
During our cooperation with Unfold, we studied the app from the inside out by performing comprehensive testing. Here are the types of testing we’ve applied to achieve our quality goals.
- Functional Testing. We make sure the app’s behavior complies with the established business logic. We helped Unfold make the user’s first impression of the app flawless by discovering bugs at the signup and login stages. We also ensure the process of creating content is frictionless and there are no issues with in-app purchases, creating bio sites, or minting digital collectibles, among other things.
- Regression Testing. Since Unfold continuously works on developing new features, our QA engineers perform regression testing regularly to ensure the app’s stable performance regardless of frequent updates. We run regression on release candidates weekly, and based on the results of our testing, it is decided which features will make it to the prod.
- Integration Testing. Since the moment we started our cooperation, Unfold has grown significantly. It has transformed from a simple story-making app into a brand-level storytelling platform with the opportunity to create bio sites and earn by selling your creative work as digital collectibles. This development has resulted in several integrations with major services like Twitter, Squarespace, Stripe, Paypal, Epidemic Sound, Rarible, and others. Our QA team ensures these integrations remain seamless and fully functional at all times.
- Cross-Platform Testing. A platform with over 10 mln active daily users and one billion active monthly users requires testing on a wide selection of real devices. That’s why we test Unfold’s iOS app on eight iOS devices with iOS 13-16 versions, whereas Unfold for Android is tested on twelve Android devices with Android 7-13 versions.
- Usability Testing. Sufficient time was spent on usability testing to make the app not only appealing in design but also comfortable and intuitive in use, with no distractions to the storytelling process. Our QA engineers always try to put themselves in the users’ shoes to better understand their needs and thus improve the user experience. We closely collaborate with Unfold’s product team to clarify requirements and share our suggestions, such as making error messages easier to understand or allowing users to download custom fonts multiple times for faster access.
- User Review Monitoring. Unfold is not only open to our suggestions but also listens to its audience. That’s why we monitor user reviews from App Store and Google Play, and if a user reports a bug, we try to reproduce it and then hand over our findings to Unfold’s developers. We’re proud to see Unfold has five stars in App Store and four point five stars on Google Play.
When we just started working with Unfold, there needed to be more testing documentation. Over the years of our partnership with Unfold, we’ve helped them document 100% of testing scenarios. Unfold’s testing repository now contains over 2800 test cases, and we update them weekly with every release candidate and whenever new functionality is being developed.
To prevent breaking changes associated with new releases of operating systems, we test Unfold on beta versions of these systems. This way, we have plenty of time to find bugs and fix them before the latest iOS and Android versions are rolled out to the general public.
Bugs Found
Besides reporting a variety of minor bugs, we discovered and helped eliminate several critical crash errors that could have led to losing thousands of users.
Actual result: The black spinner is always displayed in the ‘For you’ and ‘Effects’ tabs after switching to different tabs on the home screen.
Expected result: The spinner isn’t displayed.
Actual result: The sticker modal view jumped up after upgrading to Pro.
Expected result: The sticker modal shouldn’t be cropped.
Actual result: The app crashes while using the October Dump template.
Expected result: No crashes occur while using the October Dump or any other template.
Result
The years of our productive partnership have allowed Unfold to continuously extend the app’s functionality without disrupting the experience of existing users. With the Unfold development team and QAwerk engineers’ joint effort, the app has gained a new look and a new feel, attracting millions of users around the globe. Our team was given sufficient flexibility and independence, which allowed QAwerk testers to be fully engaged in the project and thus contribute to enhancing the product. Apart from receiving an increased number of positive reviews in the App Store and Google Play, Unfold got acquired by Squarespace, one of the leading SaaS-based CMSs worldwide. This project proves that hard work pays off, while commercial success is impossible without the product’s high quality.
